It is about optimising four pillars to build a life you actually want to live.
Most people think FI is just about hitting a number in a bank account. I used to think that too. But the more I have been on this journey, the more I realise that true Financial Independence means having freedom across four areas of your life โ Wealth, Health, Time, and Relationships. Get all four right and the money almost takes care of itself.
This is the framework I use to guide every decision on the DSFI journey.
Building financial freedom through investing, debt elimination, and passive income.
โค๏ธBecause FI means nothing if you are not well enough to enjoy it.
โฐThe ultimate currency. FI is about buying back your time, not just your retirement.
๐จโ๐ฉโ๐งโ๐ฆFamily, experiences, and the people who make the journey worth it.
Wealth is the pillar most people start with โ and for good reason. Without a handle on your finances, the other three pillars are much harder to build. On the DSFI journey, Wealth covers everything from clearing consumer debt and building an emergency fund, to opening a Stocks and Shares ISA, maximising your SIPP, and building a dividend portfolio that generates passive income.
The goal is not to be rich. The goal is to have enough โ enough that work becomes a choice, not a necessity.
๐ Articles on Wealth coming soonYou cannot enjoy Financial Independence if you arrive at it burned out, unhealthy, or unhappy. Health is the pillar that makes all the others worthwhile. For me, this means taking the long-term view โ not just on investments, but on energy, sleep, exercise, and mental wellbeing.
The pressure of financial stress takes a real toll. Part of the DSFI journey is reducing that pressure, so we can show up better โ as a parent, a partner, and a person. A healthy FI journey is a sustainable one.
๐ Articles on Health coming soonTime is the one thing you cannot get back. Every hour spent doing work you hate is an hour you are not spending with your family, pursuing something you love, or simply living on your own terms. FI, at its core, is about buying back your time.
Not necessarily retiring at 40 โ but having the option to step away from a job that drains you, to be present with your teenagers before they leave home, and to stop trading your most valuable asset for a salary. Time freedom is the whole point.
๐ Articles on Time coming soonThis is the pillar that makes the whole journey meaningful. I am doing this for my wife, my two teenagers, and the life we want to build together. Relationships covers everything from family finances and doing things as a couple, to the campervan dream โ travelling together, creating memories, and living out the Die with Zero philosophy of spending on experiences that matter.
Travel sits here for us. Not as a luxury to be earned at retirement, but as an intentional part of life right now. The best investment we make is in the people we love.
